Books, Movies
Long before Zack Snyder started filming the adaptation of the endlessly anticipated holy writ of graphic novels, ‘Watchmen’, rumors were circulating that epic story about troubled, anti-superheroes would be turned into a franchise. However, yesterday an inside source at Deadline.com attempted set the record straight for those in fear of ‘Watchmen’’s cinematic legacy being soiled.
“There is no truth to anything related to a movie sequel. Not a chance by a longshot. With regards to the comics, well, I guess anything is possible. I’ll keep my opinion to myself as to whether it’s a smart idea to do so”, says the insider.
For nearly thirty years, studios and creative visionaries fought to get the “unfilmable” movie made, but ultimately it was Snyder who harnessed the book’s dense mythology, massive scope and damaged protagonists into something studios could swallow.
Depending on who you ask, the film was either deemed as accurate and loyal of an adaptation as we were ever going to get, or a tedious metaphysical melodrama. Personally, I think Synder nailed it. He synthesized the hopes of fanboys and the expectations of the blockbuster audience in a way that was both boldly expansive and incredibly respectful to Alan Moore’s genius source material.
Ultimately, the film broke just above even at the box office, with most people unfamiliar with the book relegating it to overhyped fanboy lore. Perhaps the best move for everybody involved is to accept the split decision, move on and remember that before the backlash, the real triumph was that the film was ever made at all.
